Dan and his family moved to the U.S. on a permanent visa from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dan's father, Eduardo Rafael Cerutti, M.D., was granted a residency at the Cleveland Clinic in the Department of Pediatrics. Their first apartment was on Lennox Road, by the busy intersection of Cedar and Fairmount, a stone's throw from University Circle, Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Institute of Art, where Dan took classes during high school.
